Defense Clinical Report

This letter is to certify and validate properties pertaining to "Defense" brand anti-dermatophyte (ringworm) and anti-bacterial soap. Evidence is presented for the recognition of these properties.

Materials and Methods

LyfoCults brand dermatophyte ATCC (American Type Culture Collection) #28188 Trichophyton rubrum and a viable strain of Escherichia coli were the organisms utilized. Troy Biologicals brand DTM plates lot # 6065000 with exp. date 5/16/06 were utilized for Trichophyton rubrum along with BBL brand TSA II 5% SB agar plates lot # 6067642 with exp. date 7/4/06 were utilized for Escherichia coli. B. Braun Medical Inc. brand saline was utilized for reconstitution of Trichophyton rubrum.

Trichophyton rubrum was reconstituted from lyopholized (freeze-dried) form to a pasty consistancy. This consistancy was then plated onto the DTM plates using sterile swabs after a 10 minute incubation period. Plates were then incubated at room temperature for 7-10 days at which point luxurious growth became apparent. This step was performed to validate the viability of our strain of Trichophyton rubrum.

The growth was subcultured onto fresh DTM plates. Within 30 minutes of inoculating the DTM plates, a human test subject washed their hands with Defense brand soap, capturing the water falling from their hands into a sterile self-contained cup. A sterile pipette was used to transfer the solution onto the freshly inoculated DTM plates by placing drops in specifics areas onto the DTM plates. A yellow wax pencil was utilized to mark the three circles where the drops of soapy water drops fell. A total of four plates were utilized.

The viable strain of Escherichia coli was utilized by inoculating TSA plates with a lawn of Escherichia coli. Within minutes of inoculating the four BAP plates, drops of soapy water containing Defense brand soap. A yellow was pencil was utlilized to indicate the exact areas on the TSA plates by circling the three inoculation areas.

Results

Within nine days, growth became apparent over the entire area of the inoculated plates except in the yellow indicated cirlces where the soapy water drops were noted. This occured on all four DTM plates and the four TSA plates. Zones of inhibition were clearly present.

Discussion

Defense soap with tea tree oil presents visible anti-dermatophitic as well as anti-bacterial properties as evidenced by zones of inhibition (areas of no growth).
